Jose Esparza
Architect & Urban Designer
José is an Associate Director at Somos Civic Design Studio, where he leads innovative urban design projects that blend community engagement with sustainable solutions. With a background in architecture and urban design, he brings over 10 years of experience working on resilience, public space, housing, and civic infrastructure.
José is committed to re-imagine cities by incorporating sustainable design solutions that elevate the quality of the built environment and the communities around them, while looking to achieve social equity through design by prioritizing the experiences of vulnerable populations.
His work explores the relationships between theory and practice to produce compelling understandings of urban environments, settlements, and the territory beyond city boundaries. He has worked for renowned design practices such as Elemental in Santiago, Chile, and A-911 in Mexico City. He was also a consultant for the Institute of the National Housing Fund for Workers (INFONAVIT).
José has a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey and a bachelor’s degree in science in Architecture from the Politecnico di Milano. He also has a master’s degree of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
